Gallipolis Rotary Club learns about Electro Physiology

A sample EP Lab

President Deborah Rhodes welcomed assembled Rotarians and guests to the meeting.  Visiting with us today (again!) were Jodie Anderson and Shawn Siders, both from OVB, guests of Katrinka Hart and David Nadler.  Your secretary obtained completed membership applications from Jodie and Shawn, so we will be seeing them weekly!  Our other guest was Dr. Choudhary Rayani, MD from Holzer Clinic who was our speaker for the meeting.

Literacy Project Reception–President Deb reminded everyone that our club will be hosting a reception for the school librarians this Thursday, January 22nd at 4:00 pm at Bossard Library.  This will be our official delivery of reference materials for the libraries in the new high schools being constructed in Gallia county.  Be sure to write this important date and time down in your schedule so we can have a good attendance of Rotarians for this important event.

Valentine’s Dinner Meeting–Our annual Valentine’s Dinner will be Tuesday, February 10th, at 6:00 pm at a soon to be disclosed location.  There will be no morning meeting that day and this is an evening of great fellowship for Rotarians, spouses, and friends.  Stay tuned for more information!

FellowshipLou Ellen Werry led club fellowship with a bit of Inauguration history, a few Inaugural hits, misses, brawls, and other happenings.  Did you know this year is the UNs official year of Astronomy?  Kurt Dailey bought a Happy Buck in honor of his successful shoulder surgery and the fact he can now raise his arm to the pledge position!  Keep healing up, Kurt.

Split-The-PotDan Whiteley ran STP for the meeting and collected a goodly amount to raise the small pot to $5.00!  The lucky ticket holder for the day’s drawing was Clyde Evans.  Clyde pulled the Jack of Diamonds missing the big pot which is now at $194.00!  After a moment of cognitive intervention, the Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone NOT having gray hair!

ProgramResty Alonzo introduced our speaker for the morning, Dr. Choudhary Rayani, MD, who spoke to the club about Electrophysiology.  Dr. Rayani has been with Holzer Clinic as an Internist since 1999, and left for a couple of years to pursue a fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology.  Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical impulses involved in the rhythm of the human heart.  Dr. Rayani explained how the heart needs to work in an organized fashion and how issues can occur due to heart attack, stroke, or age.  Some of the procedures that are used in Electrophysiology include ablation, pacemakers, defibrillation, and biventrical ICD.

The procedures are performed using specialized equipment in an EC lab established last month  in the Holzer Heart Center.  Dr. Rayani explained how the procedures are performed in the lab usually in the span of 2 1/2 hours.  Our speaker had several sample pacemaker units and the the defibrillation pacemaker available to view.  Our members were most interested and engaged our speaker with some lively Q & A after his remarks.  Thank you, Resty, and Dr. Rayani, for the interesting program.
