Gallipolis Rotary Announces 2009 Scholarships

Three students from South Gallia High School are among the six 2009 Rotary Scholars.  Ashley Miller, Meghen Daines, and Amber Miller were guests of Gallipolis this morning.  The scholars were introduced to the club by Scholarship Chair, Bob Hood.  All three will be attending the University of Rio Grande this fall.  Ashley plans to major in Education, Meghen is planning on majoring in integrated Social Studies, and Amber is also planning on majoring in education.  Bob thanked the members of the scholarship committee for their hard work this year and the final three scholars will be introduced at next week’s meeting.

President Deb Rhodes welcomed our special guests and members to the regular morning meeting.  Jack Buxton from Pt. Pleasant was our visiting Rotarian.  Melissa Kimmel and Tracy Call were guests of Rotary this morning.

Board Meeting—President Deb reminded club members the monthly board meeting will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6th, at 1:00 pm at the OVB Main Office, in the downstairs board room.  New members are reminded that attendance at one board meeting is required to be able to move to a blue badge.

Ro-Li-Ki—Deb reminded everyone and circulated a sign-up sheet for the May 19th annual Ro-Li-Ki meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis clubs.  Remember, there will be NO MORNING MEETING on the 19th!

New Member InductionKurt Dailey officiated as the club inducted James Wellington into the club.  James comes into our club in the classification of Chiropractor.  After the ceremonial reading of the Object of Rotary and the 4-Way Test, Kevin Petrie presented the red new member badge.  President Deb extended the welcoming hand of membership to James on behalf of the entire club.

Relay For LifeProject Chair, Jenny Evans reminded the club about our plans to participate in this year’s Cancer Society Relay For Life.  There will be 10-12 slots for walkers and the sign-up sheet was circulated for the first time.   Jenny reminded everyone to buy memorial luminaries through our club so we get the credit towards our goal!  Mark your calendars for June 5th!

Thank You ‘Book Sorters’—President Deb thanked all those who sorted books last Thursday.  Sorters included Bonnie McFarland, Jenny  Evans, Margaret Evans and Evans Smalley.  All the books were sorted by the time Chuck Clark stopped by to snap a few pictures and these are now on the web site.

Split-The-Pot—Paul Koch stepped in and ran STP for the meeting and pushed the small pot up the $7.00.  The lucky ticket holder today was Kevin Petrie!  Kevin donated the proceeds to our Relay For Life project!  In the draw for the big pot of $53.00 Kevin pulled the six of clubs.  The Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone who bought a STP ticket this morning!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary ‘zipped and doo-dahd’ his way into this morning’s club fellowship.  Gordon took no time in assessing a late fine on late-comer Margaret Evans.  Our club had one birthday this week– Lou Ellen Werry. Lou Ellen chose the option to contribute the big bucks to be serenaded by this week’s Mystery SingerKurt Dailey stepped up, filled that slot, and properly performed Happy Birthday to our birthday girl!  Gordon concluded with some historical trivia and a few words of wisdom.

Program—Program Chair, Shirley Doss, introduced our speaker for the meeting, Lora Lynn Snow, the founder of the Ohio Valley Symphony.  Lora recounted how so many Rotarians played important organizational roles in the growth of the Symphony.  “Gallipolis Rotary has always been there for the Ohio Valley Symphony,” she remarked.

Our speaker invited Rotarians to a birthday party for the symphony this Saturday evening at the Ariel.  The final concert of this season features violinist Michi Wiancko, who will perform Johannes Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with the symphony.  A special free 4th of July outdoor concert in the park is planned for this year’s Independence Day’s activities at the Gallipolis City Park.
