Rotarians Hear From Gallia Fair President **Updated**
Gallia Junior Fair President, Dan Brown, addressed Gallipolis Rotary this week and
provided an interesting update regarding this year’s Gallia County Junior Fair which starts next week. “It takes a lot of people who dedicate their time to help make the Gallia County Junior Fair one of the great events in our area,” said Dan.
President Bonnie McFarland welcomed Rotarians and guests to the weekly meeting. Guests included visiting Rotarian Curt Wiggins from Jackson Rotary and Evans Smalley, daughter of Margaret Evans. We had an excellent attendance today. Kevin Petrie provided the invocation. Bonnie thanked everyone who came out and gave our District Governor a great reception last week.
We’ll Miss You, Jenny—Bonnie announced that today is Jenny Evans last Rotary meeting as she will be attending Marshal Law School starting in August. Jenny’s been a big hand in all our projects especially in leading the club’s efforts in the Relay For Life over the past two years. Come back and visit when you can, Jenny!
Foundation Minute—Jim Morrison gave today’s Foundation minute talk to the club. The Rotary Foundation has a great history and we need to support it. Jim reminded everyone of the slogan: “Every Rotarian, Every Year!”
Rotarians were saddened to learn of the passing of fellow Rotarian, Bob Eastman. Bob has been a fixture of our club for many, many years and we will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sheila and the Eastman family.
Rotary License Plate—We all have to renew our Ohio license plates and now you can purchase an Ohio plate with the Rotary emblem and $15 of the $25 extra fee goes to the RI Foundation. The easiest way to sign up is right online at http://www.oplates.com.
Junior Fair Livestock Royalty—Denise Shockley reviewed the club’s project
supporting the Junior Fair Livestock Royalty contest. Denise organizes this important event and makes sure everything comes off without a hitch! This year President Bonnie was on hand to help. Note the trophies and sashes that were supplied by our club. Great work, Denise!
Split-The-Pot—Shirley ‘Casino Queen’ Doss jumped in today and organized this week’s STP, selling a boatload of tickets. Our small pot was $8 and the large pot was $117. The winning ticket, drawn by Grae Schuster, was . . . Shirley! We didn’t have an actual winner until Shirley checked her ticket, and sure enough! Shirley named the Foundation Fine against anyone who does not belong to the Senior Citizen’s Center.
Thank You Cards—Bonnie announced our club received a number of nice cards this week including a card of thanks from Dave’s American Grill, and a note from Scholarship winner, Anne Carman. We also received a personal note from DG Ram Gawande thanking the club for the great reception and warm welcome to Gallipolis Rotary.
Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led club fellowship this week. Gordon asked all the men of the club to stand and then give the ladies of our club a big round of applause. Thanks for putting up with us guys, ladies, we’re glad you’re Rotarians, too! Gordo covered the notable events of this day including a special birthday for Rotarian Kevin Petrie! For his donation to the Foundation, Kevin enjoyed a special quartet of Past President Debbie, Jenny Evans, Jodie Anderson, and Margaret Evans, to sing him, ‘Happy Birthday.’ Well done, ladies!
Program—President Bonnie introduced our speaker for the morning, David Brown, President, Gallia County Fair Board. Dave passed around the new flyer for the fair which is supported 100% by local advertising which really helps to stretch the fair board’s advertising budget. Dave also went on to say the number of Junior Fair projects by the county’s 4-H members is still strong, but the number of market hogs is down to 452. The number of market steers is up by +2 this year. Our very own Rotarian, Bob Hood, is the emcee for the Fair Queen contest, although he promised not to sing ‘There She Is.’
One interesting side note, Rotarian Jodie Anderson crafted the Junior Fair’s new web site and you can see it at http://www.galliacountyfair.org. Jodie is working on a new web site for Gallipolis Rotary.
