President Bonnie opened the November 10th, 2009 meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club. She mentioned that the club received a letter of position resignation from Katrinka Hart. The Board voted to replace Katrinka, and officially name Shawn Siders, treasurer of the club. Congratulations, Shawn!
Bonnie also mentioned that she took part in a President’s meeting and found it very helpful.
Jim Morrison passed out election ballots to name the club’s 5 Board members and President elect. The Top 5 votes were James Wellington, Kevin Petrie, Jodie Anderson, Shirley Doss, and Debbie Saunders. Jim will announce the President Elect at the next meeting.
Jodie announced that Generation Gallia YPN is working on a special project, CANstruction. She explained that the group is trying to get organizations in the area to donate canned food items or take part in the CANstruction competition by building a structure out of non-perishable canned food items. Please see Jodie for more details on how you or your organization can help!
Emily Dailey announced that she still needs volunteers for Rotary Reading! Rotary Reading takes place on the First Wednesday of every month!
Dan Whiteley informed the group that we need to sell more items at the auction to raise funds for Relay for Life! So far, the club has raised about $170.50.
Bonnie and Debbie announced that we raised over $3930 for the Book Drive. Shawn, Bonnie, and Debbie presented checks to Pat Stout, representing South Gallia HS and River Valley HS, as well as Amanda Bailey, from GAHS.
Split the Pot - $17 of tickets were sold, making the small pot $5 and the large pot $15. Jim Morrison won AGAIN! However, he only won the small pot. He fined anyone in the club that has not checked out a library book in the last week.
Fellowship - Cleeland fined Jodie for being late! The club also sang to Shirley Doss for her birthday. Cleeland advised the club to “be wise”. Paul had a happy buck and told us about a concert that his daughter took part in at Marshall University that included students from all over the state.
Program - Deb Rhodes introduced PDG Mel Simon for today’s program. The title of the program was “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”. DG Ram Gawande tasked Mel to go to different districts to give a presentation concerning the Rotary Foundation.
During his presentation, Mel showed photographs of the Rotary Headquarters and various other pictures from places that he has visiting on behalf of Rotary. Mel spoke on Operation We Care and community projects, funded by District Simplified Grants.
Mel also explained that the Rotary Foundation uses contributions in a 3 year cycle, so that the investment from 3 years can pay for the administrative costs of the Foundation. He explained that 50% of the Foundation monies go to the District Designated Fund and 50% goes to the Rotary Foundation.
Mel finished the presentation by explaining information on becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.
President Bonnie presented PDG Mel Simon a certificate and adjourned the meeting.
