Gallipolis Rotary Inducts Two New Members

DecNewMembers

The Gallipolis Rotary Club added two new Rotarians to the roles today.  Shana Booher, a physician relations specialist for Holzer Clinic, and Chris Marazon, a family practice physician with Holzer Medical Center, stood before the club and were guided through the induction process by Sergeant of Arms, Kurt Dailey.  Chris was proposed into membership by PDG Mel Simon and Shana was sponsored by President Bonnie McFarland.  Congratulations, Shana and Chris, and welcome to Gallipolis Rotary.

President Bonnie opened our meeting promptly at 7:15 am with a little bit of prodding from Sergeant of Arms Kurt.  Kevin Petrie gave our invocation today.  Our guests today included visiting Rotarian Jack Buxton from Pt. Pleasant Rotary and our speaker for today, Sherri Adams, Registered Pharmacist from Holzer Medical Center.  President Bonnie congratulated the club for the good attendance at the meeting.

No Morning Meeting Next Week—Christmas Party—President Bonnie sent around the sign-up sheet for next week’s Christmas Party which will be held at the new Merry Winery location at SR 850 and US 35, the site of the Jewel Evans Mill.  Members are asked to bring an ornament for the ornament exchange and arrive at 6:00 pm for a time of fellowship with dinner to be served at 6:30 pm.  Katherine Brabham’s Black Tie To Barbeque will cater the meal.  If you still want to come and did not sign the sheet, be sure to contact Bonnie.

Important—No Meetings on December 22nd or 29th!  Due to the holiday travel and schedules, there will no regular morning meetings until January 5, 2010.  Enjoy the time with your families, and we will see you back next year!  One last thing–Remember the Rotary Foundation with a check before December 31st.  You can give to the Foundation on line at www.rotary.org.

Club Board Meeting—Our next club board meeting will be held right after the club meeting on January 5th.  Members may receive attendance makeup credit for attending any monthly board meeting.  Red Badge holders are reminded that attendance is required at least one club board meeting.

Leave Of Absence Granted—President Bonnie announced that Denise Shockley will be taking a three month leave of absence during the months of December, January, and February due to work schedule conflicts.  We’ll miss you, Denise! Just as a reminder, leaves are granted to members for up to six months and may be renewed one time.  During this time the member does not pay for meals, but is required to pay the appropriate dues to keep the membership active.  This information is spelled out in our recently approved club by-laws.

Welcome back, Matt Willis—The club welcomed back ADG Matt Willis who was out last week for heart catherization.  Matt spoke of his appreciation to everyone who kept him in their thoughts and prayers.

Split-The-PotJim Morrison ran STP for our meeting with $9 in the small pot and an unbelievable $45 in the large pot.  Our lucky ticket holder was Andrea Gannaway who pocketed the $9, demonstrating that it pays to come to the meetings!  With a flourish and drum roll, Andrea pulled the eight of hearts, narrowly missing the big one.  For the Foundation Fine, Andrea fined any members who did NOT take in the Junior Women’s Parade of Homes event.

Fellowship—Club fellowship was led by Cleeland Willis today who set about collecting a few fines for missing pins/badges, Chuck Clark, and latecomers, Jodie Anderson and James Wellington.  We had a large number of Happy Buck$ today, so many that your intrepid scribe may not have correctly listed everyone, so if I missed you, please forgive!  Andrea Gannaway paid a buck in honor of passing the president’s gavel at the Junior Women’s Club to the next President.  President Bonnie bought $5.00 worth of Happy Bucks for a number of good reasons.  Dave Smith’s Happy Buck was to promote the free Christmas Buffet at Dave’s American Grill.  This is Dave’s second year he opens to the community from 11 am to 2 pm.  Rotarians are more than welcome to come and help bus tables and help out.  Margaret Evans bought a buck to welcome Chris and Shana to the club.  Jodie Anderson announced that OVB’s CANstruction team has collected over 1700 canned food items for their project.  New Rotarian Chris Marazon bought a happy buck for the successful procedures recently performed on his children.  President Bonnie offered a ‘fiver’ to brag on HMC/Holzer Clinic’s taking of the best theme in the Christmas Parade and the balance for to recognize several Gallipolis Rotarians.  WHEW!  Margaret Evans and Gordon Amsbary will be celebrating birthdays this next week, so Cleeland omitted their fine if they would sing Happy Birthday for themselves!  Cleeland concluded fellowship with ‘On this day in History.’

Program—Our program chair for today was Dave Nadler, whoBonnie_Sherri expertly handled arrangements, In Absentia, as he could not be with us.  Dave arranged for Sherri Adams, Holzer Medical Center Registered Pharmacist, to speak to the club about the changing role of the hospital pharmacist.

Sherri emphasized the many safeguards provided for patients by the resident pharmacists who carefully review the drugs prescribed by physicians during a hospital stay.  Care is taken to review a patient’s current medications as well as any new drugs that may be ordered.  This pharmacist setting greatly differs from the retail pharmacist whose primary job is to fill prescriptions and answer questions.  Hospital pharmacists are heavily involved in the patient’s care.  Sherri took a few minutes to review some of the changes at the retail level where pharmacists may administer inoculations such as flu shots.  Thank you, Dave and Sherri, for the interesting program.
