THE GALLIPOLIS ROTARY CLUB BLOG

Gallipolis Rotary Club kicked off Literacy Month with a Literacy program provided by Literacy Committee members, Debbie Saunders and Emily Dailey.  Members learned that literacy is more than just being able to read and write but a continuum of education that is life long.  Statistics from RI document that there are over 800 million people over the age of 15 throughout the world who are illiterate.  Girls and women comprise nearly 64% of this statistic.  Rotary’s world wide efforts, including local efforts by Gallipolis Rotary are focused on attacking this problem.  Our own, Operation We Care medical mission to the Philippines has its own grant to improve literacy through donations of books and nutrition assistance to schools. President Bonnie called the meeting to order.

Treasurer’s Report:  Shawn went over transactions out of our checking account that included a $300 donation to the French Art Colony and $650 for morning meals.  He mentioned that we had expenses due to the Valentine’s Day dinner and toward sponsorsing a shelter box.  He also mentioned that we redeemed a CD for $2500.  Shawn also mentioned that a portion of our fines, happy bucks, etc. are supposed to go into the Savings account and he had not been doing that until now.  We should see activity in our Savings account due to this.
