Horizon Telecom Execs Speak To Rotary

Horizon Program

Randy Davies and Randy Drewyor from Horizon Telecom of Chillicothe spoke to Gallipolis Rotary about the SE Ohio Healthcare Network.  Jodie McCalla was our program sponsor for today’s meeting and introduced our speakers who updated club members on the ongoing build out of this ambitious fiber network.  The fiber network will link the major healthcare facilities in a 13 county area and will stretch to over 700 miles by the end of 2010.  While the medical centers such as Holzer Medical Center, Adena, etc will be the hubs for their county, the network will be dual purpose and will attract businesses and link industrial parks in SE Ohio.  Our speakers are also Rotarians and members of the Chillicothe First Capital Club which meets at 7:00 am on Thursdays.  Mr Drewyor is the current President of the First Capital club.

Our meeting was opened by our enterprising Sergeant-of-Arms, Kurt Dailey, as President Bonnie was engaged in some pre-meeting business!  Our invocation was given by Kevin Petrie.  President Bonnie provided an introduction of our guests and a welcome to all Rotarians.  We had a special guest Rotarian today, Dr. Lee Salzgaber, MD, a Rotarian from the island of Guam, who is currently in Gallipolis on a 6 month contract with Holzer Medical Center.  Welcome, Lee!  We look forward to seeing you in the weeks to come.

Shana Blue Badge New Blue Badge—New member, Shana Booher, received her permanent Rotary blue badge today in a little ceremony conducted by President Bonnie.  Shana joined the club back in December and has been active at all of our club projects, particularly in helping Jodie McCalla with the scholarship selections, Polio Plus Dinner, and the past weekend’s Relay For Life.  Congratulations, Shana!

Evening Meeting, June 29th—The final meeting of the 2009-2010 Rotary year will be an evening meeting at Holzer Medical Center, at 6:30 pm.  This is our annual ‘changing of the guard’ and installation of President Lou Ellen Werry and her officers for 2010-2011.  We hope to see all Rotarians for this important meeting and more details will be forthcoming.DSCF0157

Relay For Life—We had a successful Rotary team at this past weekend’s Relay For Life event.  President Bonnie thanked all who were able to come and support our team, especially though the wee hours!  Our club was able to make it’s $1,000 commitment to the Cancer Society and this year’s event is expected to raise in excess of $80,000!  An outstanding achievement.

President-Elect Lou Ellen—Lou Ellen Werry spoke briefly about the plans for the coming year.  She has appointed Shirley Doss as Program Chair.  Members need to start thinking about potential programs when called on.  If you know of speakers who would make an interesting program for our meetings, be sure to contact Shirley.  Additionally, she has asked Margaret Evans to be Membership Chair, and a special ‘ROTARY RUSH’ is planned for September to create interest in Rotary in the community.

Rotary Mile—Event Chair, Jim Morrison, brought the club up to date on the planning for the upcoming Rotary Mile.  Chuck Clark is going to promote the event on the club’s Facebook page.  This year’s event is the 63rd annual Rotary Mile!

FellowshipGordon Amsbary announced today is day 160 of 2010 and is ‘National Taco Day’.  Who would have thought!  It is also ‘National Upsy Daisy Day’.  (link provided for verification)  We had no missing pins or badges, but a number of Happy Buck$—Shana, Bonnie, and Jodie.  Zack Fosler bought a $20 ‘Embarrassment’ Happy Buck for setting his alarm clock to PM instead of AM and missing his  4 AM Relay walk time.  Gordon concluded with a few words of wisdom.

Split-The-PotDan Whiteley ran STP for our meeting announcing an $8.00 and a large pot of ‘a lot’ since our fearless Treasurer, Shawn, wasn’t with us today.  Today’s lucky winner of the small pot was Emily Dailey.  For the large pot, Emily drew the Queen of Diamonds, but alas, no cigar, for it wasn’t the Queen of Hearts!  So, the pot of $211.00 lives another week.  The Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone who did not walk at the Relay.

Program—As was cited above, our speakers from Horizon Telecom provided an interesting program.  Members present received a 1 GB thumb drive courtesy of Horizon Telecom.  President Bonnie and program chair, Jodie McCalla, presented our speakers with a Books For Schools certificate for their program today.  Two books will be donated to our elementary schools in honor of their program today.

Next week’s Program Chair is Brett Boothe and Kurt Dailey is the Program Chair for June 22nd.  Have a great week!
