City Manager Addresses Rotary Club

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Jodie and Randy Finney

Gallipolis City Manager, Randy Finney, was our featured program speaker for Tuesday’s meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  VP and President-Elect Jodie McCalla posed with our speaker for a picture at the conclusion of the meeting.  Marlin Rose was our Program Chairman today and arranged the visit by the City Manager.  Thanks, Marlin!

Our City Manager provided an interesting overview of operations for 2010 complete with statistics for such departments as Streets and Highways, and Water and Sewer.  Our speaker focused on some of the new projects such as the paving of streets and the construction of the new Justice Center, which should commence work in a few weeks.  Rotarians found this to be an interesting program and asked our speaker a number of probing questions during the Q & A time.  Mr Finney, who had been a Gallipolis Rotarian a number of years ago, was asked to re-join the club at least three different times today!  We just wanted to make that clear!

President Shirley Doss welcomed Rotarians and guests to the meeting today.  We had excellent attendance and our guests included our speaker and visiting Rotarian, Frank Capehart, from Pt. Pleasant Rotary.

Rotary Citations—President Shirley announced the club had received three different awards for Rotary Year 2010-2011.  Secretary Chuck Clark has these displayed on the club’s Facebook page if anyone is interested in seeing the individual awards.  The club received a Presidential Citation Presidential Citation 2011from RI President Ray Klinginsmith, for service and fellowship; a Certificate of Appreciation from the RI Foundation for meeting our financial goal for Polio Plus; and an Increased Membership Certificate from Rotary District Governor Calvin T. Gebhart, for exceeding our membership goals for last year.  A big congratulations should go out to Past President Lou Ellen Werry for leading the club and attaining these awards!

Fellowship—Fellowship Chair, Gordon Amsbary, led club fellowship time in his own unique way.  He fined late arrivals—Cleeland Willis and Emily Davidson a buck for arriving after the bell.  Today is “Be Kind To Humankind Day” as well as “Kiss And Make Up Day.”  Gordo concluded with some words of wisdom. President Shirley Doss welcomed the assembled Rotarians to our meeting and asked Gordon Amsbary to lead our fellowship time.

Fellowship—Gordo started out fining our brand new member, Sammy Lopez, for late arrival to the meeting.  Many other members came in just before the bell.  Gordon provided a few interesting facts for this day in history.  Today is “Harmonic Convergence Day” or as well as “National Aviation Week.”  We had two birthdays this week—Zac Fosler who was AOL today and Secretary Chuck Clark!  Chuck asked the entire club sing to him Happy Birthday.  Gordo concluded with his traditional words of wisdom. Matt and Heather Crum

Gallipolis Rotary Club welcomed new member, Heather Crum, into club membership at today’s regular meeting.  Heather is Marketing Manager with Farmers Bank and Savings Company.  Pictured above with our new member is ADG Matt Willis, who did a great job with our induction ceremony today.  Matt covered a brief history of Gallipolis Rotary and asked our candidate read the Object of Rotary to the club.  Congratulations, Heather, and welcome to the Gallipolis Rotary!

Club President, Shirley Doss, welcomed Rotarians and guests to our meeting today.  Our visiting Rotarian was Frank Capehart from Pt. Pleasant Rotary.  Good to have you with us, Frank!

FellowshipGordon Amsbary presided over our club fellowship starting with a tune from Journey which wasFellowship with Gordo recognized by a few members.  We had a birthday today—Kevin Petrie—actually a bit late and the entire club sang birthday greetings.  Gordo said he had made a ‘service call’ to CarQuest and sang Happy Birthday to Kevin since he had missed the previous meeting.  Way to go, Gordo!  Our fellowship chair reminded us that today is “Thanks For All The Gifts Day” and “Admit You’re Happy Day.”  Gordon recognized all the Rotarians with Perfect Attendance.  In conclusion, he reminded club members that today is “Sneak Zucchini On Your Neighbor’s Porch Day!”

Split-The-Pot—The club was without our usual STP operators today, so Shana Booher jumped in and sold the tickets.  Sales were brisk and our small pot grew to $7.00 and the large pot to $315.00!  Looking for an honest face, Shana asked ADG Matt to draw todays’ winning ticket which was held by Cleeland Willis!  The next two pictures tell the rest of the story:

STP--Cleeland and Shana

STP--Cleeland Willis

Cleeland very, very carefully drew for the large pot and pulled out her Majesty, The Queen Of Hearts!  As a result, Cleeland pocketed both pots.  Cleeland donated $100.00 of the jackpot to the Foundation!  Congratulations, Cleeland!

Program—Our program today was given by President Shirley on elder abuse and the new program at the Gallia Senior Resource Center for Adult Protective Services.  Shirley presented a PowerPoint that was developed by Lee Bauman on elder abuse. The center has investigated a number of abuse cases, one of which appears to financial abuse of over $300,000.  This was an excellent program.  Thank you, Shirley and Lee!
