Fellowship with Gordon: It was Lou Ellen’s Birthday and the whole club sang to her, which was far better than last weeks serenades. There were Happy Bucks from Lee Saltsgaber and Margret. It was also Mel’s daughter, Malu’s birthday. She opted for the mystery singer…Kurt! He sang an awesome birthday solo to Malu. The club was amazed!

Split-the-Pot: Was ran by Shana, $11 in the small pot and $100 in the large. Lou Ellen was the winner and donated her winnings to the Relay for Life. She lost out on the big pot by drawing the nine of clubs. She fined everyone with socks as part of Gordon’s Fellowship spiel-It was National Don’t Wear Socks Day.

Program: Dave Wiseman had the program and introduced Kid Dynamite…Brent Saunders! Brent gave an update on the newly merged entity Holzer Health System. He discussed history highlights, advantages of one Holzer along with system facts. Mel commented on how finally One Holzer makes him proud as Dr. Holzer wanted it this way.

Still in the works for the new system…A full standing ER in Meigs (Meigs is the only county in Ohio without an ER), Geriatric Psychiatric Unit, and a Wound Care Center at the Jackson Hospital.

Old Business: Reminder Ro-Ki-Li will be on May 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the hospital. It will not be held on May 15 as originally planned; therefore, there will be a meeting next week. There will NOT be a meeting on Tuesday morning, May 22nd. 

A Rotary ‘accidental quartet’ of Jodie McCalla, Jim Morrison, Lou Ellen Werry, and Gordon Amsbary debuted at the regular Gallipolis Rotary club meeting for member Paul Koch, on the occasion of a belated April birthday.  The not-quite-ready-for-primetime singers attempted to score big time for Paul with their rendition of Happy Birthday, but may still need to keep their day jobs!  Our club has a long tradition whereby the Fellowship Chair, Gordon Amsbary, seeks a small fine of a dollar or two and the member then gets to name his quartet or have the entire club sing for the occasion.  Today was just one of those special days!  Gordo also ‘fined’ Kevin Petrie for a bit of advertising on his Car Quest shirt.  He continued to wax eloquently announcing May as International Dental Awareness Month and that today is National Law Day.  Mixed in with all of the above, member Margaret Evans arrived a bit late and was asked to contribute a dollar to the club!

Welcome—Club President, Shirley Doss, welcomed members and guests to our meeting.  Our visiting Rotarians today included Frank Capehart from Pt. Pleasant and Joe Craig, from Lumberton, NC.  Joe is with Heartland Publishers and was a guest of Sammy Lopez.  We had a great turnout of regular members today and it was great to see Jeff Lanham and Dave Wiseman again!  Thanks, everyone, for making Rotary your starting point of the day today!

Split-The-Pot—Member, Lee Saltzgaber, jumped in early and ran our STP for the meeting.  Ticket sales were brisk today and our small pot grew to a respectable $10.00! Our lucky winner today was Kevin Dennis!  This makes two in a row for the lucky guy!  Kevin made a valiant effort in the drawing for the ‘Big One’ of $89.00, but came up a bit short with the eight of clubs.  Our pot continues to grow for another week!  Our Foundation Fine was assessed by Kevin against anyone NOT wearing white pants today.  He was careful to emphasize this was outerwear!

Program—Our featured speaker for the day was member Bob Hood, who presented a special talk updating the club regarding our Gallia Tourism Office.  Bob offered an interesting talk today featuring a PowerPoint presentation which will be used when the Ohio Director of Tourism comes to town this week.  Our local tourism office is funded by the 3% lodging tax paid at our local hotels and motels.  Not surprising the summer months tend to be the busiest for tourism locally and yet fall, winter, and spring athletic events often fill up available rooms.  Our speaker identified a number of important events that will be occurring in our area that our draws for tourism.  Ohio Chautauqua will be coming again this July 17-21 and will be under the tent in the City Park.  The new riverboat, Queen of The Mississippi, will call on Gallipolis October 2 and 9.  Bob also mentioned collaboration with Mason County Tourism Board as well as with the Jackson County Tourism Board in an effort to highlight the area’s local Amish businesses.  Members enjoyed the time of Q & A at the conclusion of Bob’s prepared remarks.  Excellent program, Bob!  Thanks for taking the time to update us on the fine events coming up this year.

Ro-Li-Ki—President Shirley announced there has been a change in the this year’s Ro-Li-Ki meeting.  Members need to be aware this year’s Ro-Li-Ki  meeting will occur on THURSDAY, May 24th at 6:00 pm instead of the previously schedule Tuesday date.  We will NOT have a morning meeting that week so we can attend the Thursday Ro-Li-Ki meeting.  Please make note of this change in your calendars.

The Gallipolis Rotary Club hosted Nancy Smith (above right) to learn about the progress of the Snack Pack program in the elementary schools in Gallia county.  Ms. Smith was introduced to the club by Rotarian Jeff Lanham.  Snack Pack is now in its fourth consecutive year of operation assisting some 750 children who cope with hunger and neglect.  The 501(c)3 non profit provides kid-friendly single serving packaged entrees such as macaroni or spaghetti, apple sauce, juice boxes, and a jar of peanut butter.  Volunteers package a weekend supply of snacks and seal them with a zip tie and deliver them to the schools.  School officials control the registration and distribution of the program.  School personnel discretely slip a snack pack bag into a student’s backpack to take home.  Students are prescreened by the school to avoid complications from food allergies such as peanuts.

The non-profit has encountered higher prices for many of their items, particularly peanut butter which has nearly doubled.  Nancy elaborated the organization hopes to attract a Vista volunteer to provide additional manpower to help take the program to the next level in 2013.  The community has been great in donating supplies.  The Gallia County Health Department accepts the food donations for the group.  Some Q&A followed the presentation.  Members enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about this important program.  Thank you, Nancy and Jeff!

President Shirley Doss welcomed assembled members to the meeting.  It was great to welcome back Dave Wiseman to our meeting today!  Great to see you again, and hope you will make Rotary a more regular part of your week!  Kevin Dennis provided our invocation today.  Our attendance was really down today, especially since we had a near full house last week.

Club Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led our fellowship this morning with some dinosaur trivia and some famous birthdays.  He provided a bit more historical facts and closed with a few words of wisdom—‘Do your homework . . . you’re competitor is!

Happy Buck$—Member Kevin Dennis bought a Happy Buck in honor of the completion of the asbestos removal at the old North Gallia HS building.  His granddaughter had the opportunity to take the first basketball shot in the gym.  Chuck Clark bought a Happy Buck in honor of his daughter, Dr. Meredith Workman who is on her way to Mongolia as a part of a two week educational opportunity from Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Split-The-Pot—Kevin Dennis jumped in and ran our STP for the meeting today.  Ticket sales were a bit off due to attendance, but Kevin managed to move the small pot up to $5.00.  Kevin asked our speaker, Nancy Smith, to draw the winning ticket which was held by . . . Kevin Dennis!  Kevin graciously donated his winnings back to the club.  He asked President Shirley to manage the deck of remaining cards for the draw for the ‘big one’ of $79.00.  Unfortunately, Kevin came up a bit short by drawing the eight of diamonds.  Tough luck!  Our Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone who was NOT wearing purple today.

Dr. John Ellison(left) introduced Holzer Health Systems Podiatrist, Dr. Nathan Clark, at the weekly meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  Dr. Clark’s practice covers a range of services from foot and ankle care, trauma, diabetic care, sports medicine, arthritis, and pediatrics.  Dr. Clark presented a short PowerPoint illustrating some of the more interesting aspects of Podiatry.  Rotarians enjoyed a lively Q&A time.  Thank you Drs. John and Nathan for the interesting program!

Club President Shirley Doss welcomed assembled Rotarians and guests to our morning meeting.  Member Kevin Dennis provided our invocation.  Jack Buxton was our visiting Rotarian today from the Pt. Pleasant Club.  We had an excellent turnout of members today.  Sammy Lopez turned in a makeup at Pt. Pleasant Rotary for a recently missed club meeting.  Reminder—participating in club projects, committees, and club planning meetings all count toward attendance, so be sure to indicate any activity on the weekly attendance sheet when you sign in at meetings!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led off our fellowship this morning with a bit of movie trivia, a little didactics, some groupings, and a dimple on the bottom of a wine bottle!  Did you realize today is ‘National Blah, Blah, Blah Day’ and National Cow Chip Throwing Day?’  He concluded with a few words of wisdom.

Happy Buck$—Lou Ellen Werry offered a buck and an interesting short story behind it on how to get a car door unlocked!  Chuck Clark bought a Happy Buck to announce that his daughter, Dr. Meredith Workman, as accepted a position as Pediatric Plastic Surgeon at Cardon Children’s Hospital in Mesa, AZ in July.  Twelve years ago, Meredith attended an evening meeting of Gallipolis Rotary before launching her medical education.

District Assembly—One of the most IMPORTANT district meetings of the year is coming up this Saturday, April 21st. Our annual District Assembly will be held at Westerville High School on the 21st from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  This is a great meeting for new Rotarians and for officers and directors for the coming year to attend.  Jodie, Lee, and Chuck are going . . . anyone else?

Split-The-Pot—Jim Morrison fearlessly ran our STP today and pushed up our weekly small pot to the sum of $9.00!  Jim asked our speaker to draw for today’s winner which was . . . Resty Alonzo!  Resty likes to remind us how normally unlucky he is in this draw over the years, but he has managed to win it twice in the past three weeks!  In the draw for the ’Big One’ of $74.00, our winner came up short today, drawing the four of diamonds.  Resty donated his winnings back to the club and assessed the Foundation Fine against ‘anyone who was wearing white’ today.

Relay For Life Award—Project Co-Chair, Shana Booher, presented a framed certificate to the club which was presented at the recent Relay For Life Kickoff Luncheon from the National Cancer Society for our efforts last year.

Rotary Lip-Sync Contest Project—Shana also took a moment to remind club members about this year’s big project for Relay For Life—First Annual Rotary Lip Sync Competition, to be held Thursday, May 31st at the Ariel Theatre at 7:00 PM.  This community event has the opportunity to become a great fundraiser as well as a fun evening the community can get behind.  Shana has produced some excellent promotional materials for this event and club members need to start to talk it up in the community.  Every business, every organization is a potential entry, but they have to know about it and that is where we need to help!  The success of this is riding on our ability to talk it up and encourage employee groups, churches, etc. to get excited and enter a skit.  We have the opportunity to make this a fun evening and a repeat fundraiser for Relay.

Relay For Life Luminaries—Keep the forms in your office and hand these out to everyone you meet.  Everyone buys a luminary or two for relatives and friends who have had cancer.  Make sure they buy theirs from ROTARY!

Gallipolis Rotary heard from Kurt Dailey who provided a stimulating talk to assembled Rotarians at the regular meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  President Shirley Doss welcomed members and noticed we were a bit short of the usual numbers today.

District Assembly—One of the most IMPORTANT district meetings of the year is coming up on Saturday, April 21st. Our annual District Assembly will be held at Westerville High School on the 21st from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  This is a great meeting for new Rotarians and for officers and directors for the coming year to attend.  We will be taking several cars, so check with Jodie or Chuck if you are interested in going.

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary handled the club fellowship time recognizing a birthday for Kevin Dennis!  For a small contribution the entire club sang Happy Birthday to Dennis.  Lee Saltzgaber offered a buck for a missing pin and Jodie McCalla and Kevin Dennis offered up late arrival fines.  Amsbary continued to amaze members with a few little known facts about toilet paper and hot dogs.  Gordo pulled out an old Rotary card he has kept for many years which was  given to him by Rotarian Lou Ford in 1971.  Some words of wisdom concluded our fellowship time.

Split-The-Pot—Jim Morrison ran our STP for the meeting and asked past-past-President Debbie Rhodes to draw our lucky winner today for the $7.00 small pot.  Our lucky winner today was none other than Nayyer Hassain.  Nayyer delicately drew for the large pot of $65.00 missing the big one with the Ten of Diamonds.  So close!  Our Foundation Fine was assessed by Nayyer for anyone who was NOT wearing blue today.

Program—Some of our best programs often come from our own members and today was one of them!  Rotarian Kurt Dailey presented, “You Want To Do What?” in a stimulating talk about his career in HR.  Kurt clearly described the ways in which to create a great work environment.  He emphasized the use of the Rotary 4-Way Test, and how these four simple questions play a key role in decision making in business.  Kurt stressed the importance of first providing clear expectations to all employees.  Second, emphasize the behaviors that support company goals.  Third, establish and evenly enforce discipline when necessary.  And always remember, ‘fear the HR Weenies!’  Rotarians enjoyed a lively Q&A time.  Thanks, Kurt, for a great program today!

Club President Shirley Doss presented two Rotarians with their official Rotary badge at the regular morning meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  Lee Bauman, left; and Heather Crum, center, both fulfilled the requirements for new members and enthusiastically traded the new member red badge for the permanent membership badge.  New members are involved in four key tasks to acquaint them with the club, participate in local projects, attend a club board meeting, and familiarize themselves with the object of Rotary membership.  Congratulations, Heather and Lee!

Relay For Life Kickoff—Tuesday is a big day for Rotarian Bonnie McFarland with the kickoff of this year’s Relay For Life and it’s annual luncheon.  Our club will be participating in a unique fundraiser for Relay this year—the First Annual Relay For Life Lip Sync Competition! Every member needs to have a Rotarian At Work shirt which we will be wearing at the event.  We will be  assembling an order for shirts starting next week, if you need to order one or an extra!  (Yeah, it’s Paul!)

Fellowship—Our Fellowship Chair Gordon Amsbary provided some historical trivia to start off club fellowship this morning.  He recounted a number of famous birthdays.  Member Amber Johnson almost had a birthday, but is actually three weeks later than previously recorded.  Gordon will be checking back, Amber!

Split-The-Pot—Shana Booher jumped in and ran our STP for our meeting today.  Ticket sales ran our small pot up to $7.00 and the large pot up to $58.00.  Shana asked President Shirley to draw the winner which was Resty Alonzo.  Our winner rewarded the club’s Foundation by donating the small pot back to the club.  Resty chose very carefully from the deck and missed the ‘big one’ by drawing the five of hearts.  The Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone who did NOT attend the Holzer Consolidation celebration last Friday.

Program—The club heard from member Amber Johnson who updated us about a number of programs from Holzer Homecare.   Amber presented the club with a short slide show of scenes and pictures from Camp Beaver bereavement camp for kids.  Our club has supported this overnight event for kids ages 6-15, and it was quite a success.  This is a great program helping  local kids who have suffered some type of personal loss.

The assisted living facility at Wingate is now offering an adult day care program for mobile seniors on a private pay basis.  Participants enjoy the many activities with the residents at Wingate.  In addition, Amber announced a technology update for the popular Lifeline program for local elderly who may be living alone.  The system now features a auto-alert device which can detect life threatening falls.  If the subscriber does not push a reset button, an emergency situation is assumed and assistance is dispatched.  Thank you, Amber and Bonnie, for arranging this program!

President Shirley Doss called the meeting to order after the regular club meeting.  Shirley briefed the board the club has filed the necessary corporation form for ‘continued existence’ with the Ohio Attorney General’s office.

Treasurer’s Report—The board examined the report from our Treasurer, Shawn Siders, of the financial status of the club.  The club’s restricted funds have grown well this year.  The report was accepted as presented.

Presidential Citation—President Shirley briefed the board regarding this year’s qualifications for a club Presidential Citation.  The requirement of 100% member participation donating the full $100 is a large hurdle for many club members.  There may be very few citations issued this year.

Relay For Life—Project Chair, Shana Booher, briefed the board of the details for this year’s First Annual Lip Sync Competition.  Shana is well organized and the information will be going out in coordination with the kickoff of this year’s campaign.

The Gallipolis Rotary club heard from new Gallipolis City Schools Superintendent, Roger Mace, at our weekly meeting.  Superintendent Mace was the guest of Rotarian Margaret Evans.  Club President, Shirley Doss, opened the meeting and welcomed a large gathering of members and guests.  The club welcomed Scott Saunders and Robbie Pugh, back for their second visit.  Secretary Chuck made certain they received a membership application!

District Conference—ADG Matt Willis announced the arrangements for this year’s District Conference, May 18-19, at The Conference Center at Northpointe, Lewis Center.  I have provided a hyperlink to the registration page for this conference.

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary wasted no time in announcing birthdays for this week.  Our very own Shana Booher offered up a couple of bucks so the entire club could sing Happy Birthday to her.  We actually sounded good this morning!  Our fellowship chair was about to collect a late arrival fine from VP/Pres-elect, Jodie McCalla when Zac Fosler popped in the door.  Jodie thinks the club should start accepting debit cards or PayPal or something.  Gordon announced that today is also ‘Quirky County Music Day.’  In the ‘Extremely Momentous Developments Department,’ Lee Saltzgaber was discovered rooting for The Ohio State University over the Orangemen of Syracuse.

Split-The-Pot—Lee Saltzgaber ran our STP for our meeting today selling a boatload of tickets to raise our small pot to $10.00.  Lee asked our speaker, Roger Mace, to draw today’s winning ticket which was held by none other than Jim Morrison.  In the draw for the ‘Big One’ of $50.00, Jim came up a bit short with the King of ‘something.’  (My Bad!)  In keeping with March Madness, Jim assessed the Foundation Fine against anyone who is NOT going to travel to see the Final Four tournament.  Good one, Jim!

Ro-Li-Ki Banquet—This year’s combined meeting of Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis will be held Tuesday EVENING, May 15th, at 6 pm in the Holzer Conference Center.  Mark your calendars!  There will be NO Morning Meeting that week.  We would like to see an excellent attendance of Rotarians at this meeting.

Program—Meeting program chair, Margaret Evans formally introduced our speaker to the club.  Superintendent Roger Mace comes to Gallipolis City Schools from the Bloom Carroll School District where he was Superintendent for five years.  Our speaker has classroom experience as a teacher, coach, and principal since entering education in 1989.  Superintendent Mace holds a BS and Masters degrees from Ohio University and he completed his Superintendent work at Ashland University.

Rotarians enjoyed the energetic talk by our new school chief and hearing the emphasis on academics and improving the local curriculum.  The focus will be on improving reading and mathematics and keeping the curriculum consistent in all elementary schools.  Superintendent Mace emphasized, “It is an honor to be here in Gallipolis.  Your school district will be moving ahead on all fronts to achieve Excellence With Distinction!”  Members and guests enthusiastically applauded our speaker and enjoyed a short time of Q&A.

Gallipolis Rotarians learned a few interesting facts about the music scene in Nashville from program speaker, Shana Smith.  Rotarian/husband, Dave Smith, introduced our speaker. 

Shana started singing and playing guitar with her Dad who encouraged her to perform and enter talent shows.  She has developed her own unique vocal style and has appeared on Nashville’s Bluebird Café, the Douglas Corner Café, and other opportunities in Music City.  In January, Shana was featured the RFD Channel’s Shotgun Red’s Show and Shana shared some video of the appearance which just aired on the RFD Channel.  Shana’s passion is writing her own songs and has now finished a new CD, The Heart of Happiness, a nearly three year endeavor with Nashville songwriter, Chris Gantry.

Shana is happy to now call Gallipolis home, has enjoyed singing for a number of local groups, and expressed her appreciation how our community has welcomed her.  Rotarians enjoyed the Q & A with our speaker at the conclusion of her remarks.  Thanks, Shana and Dave, for the great program!

President Shirley Doss presided at our meeting today and welcomed members and guests.  We had excellent attendance at the meeting today and Jodie McCalla introduced two guests—Robbie Pugh, from the Silver Screen VII, and Scott Saunders, from Saunders Insurance Agency.  Welcome and we hope you will come back!  President Shirley mentioned the club had received a nice note from Marcia Smith, thanking the club for hosting her father, Eddie Edlebuthe, last weed.

Fellowship—Club fellowship chair, Gordon Amsbary, had all the male club members stand today and give a loud ‘Tarzan yell’ to get things started.  Gordo recommended members read the new issue of ‘The Rotarian’ magazine this month.  Today is the first day of Spring, National Agriculture Day, as well as National Quilting Day.  There were no fines today and everyone was on time today.

Scholarship Update—Project Chair, Jodie McCalla, reported the schools are not getting our scholarship information to students on a timely basis.  We have received some applications, but would like to see more.

Relay For Life—Relay Chair, Shana Booher, reported the club will be sponsoring the First Annual Relay For Life Lip Sync Contest, to raise monies for the annual Relay For Life fund raiser.  It will be held at the Ariel Theater and we hope to host 20 groups from business, hospitals, and education for a fun evening.  The date of the event will be announced shortly.

Gallipolis Rotarians turned out in good numbers today for the regular morning meeting.  Club President, Shirley Doss, welcomed members and guests.   Members were greeted by a great breakfast selection this morning of hot oatmeal with a variety of toppings, lots of fresh fruit, bagels, eggs, and turkey bacon.

Rotary Scholarships—Our Committee Chairperson, Jodie McCalla, announced the deadline for this year’s applicants for Rotary Scholarships is nearly upon us.  If you know an academically qualified student who should be considered, please urge them to get their applications filed.

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary introduced our club fellowship session today with a tribute to the 60’s group, ‘The Monkeys.’  Gordon continued to challenge members with some historical trivia questions.  There are a number of celebrity birthdays this week.  Gordon nearly forgot to collect some fines from late arrivals by Lou Ellen Werry, Emily Dailey, and Zac Fosler.  President Shirley fined herself for not wearing her badge today.  Thanks, guys, the club foundation thanks you!

Split-The-Pot—Rotarian Jim Morrison ran our STP for the meeting today selling a ‘boatload’ of tickets running our small pot up to a respectable $9.00.  Jim asked visitor Eddie Edlebute to draw our winning ticket which was held by David Smith!  Dave drew for the large pot of $32.00, but pulled the nine of hearts.  Dave assessed the Foundation Fine against anyone who was not on the recent ballot last week!

Program—Our program chair for today was Debbie Rhodes who introduced our speaker, Mallory Mount, Registered Dietician for Holzer Medical Center.  Our speaker personally selected our special breakfast this morning to emphasize the importance of starting the day with a great breakfast.  She emphasized that breakfast IS the most important meal of the day! 

A proper breakfast helps achieve good heart-health and maintain healthy weight.  Our speaker reviewed a number of ways to improve our breakfasts, particularly if short on time.  A question and answer time provided members the opportunity to ask specific inquiries and learn valuable nutritional information.
