Club President, Shirley Doss, welcomed members and guests to the regular meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  Zac Fosler was our program chair for today and his guests included Matt Yates, Outreach Coordinator, and Steven Vanover from Generation Now, a Division of Sojourners, headquartered in McArthur.

Matt presented an interesting talk about the Generation Now outreach which targets at-risk youth ages 16-21, who are on the streets in the seven county area of Vinton, Hocking, Ross, Jackson, Scioto, Gallia, and Meigs counties.  Matt explained that he and Steven drive the streets in Chillicothe or Jackson or Gallipolis looking for kids that are hanging out.  They can offer them help or counseling. 

The white van he drives strongly displays the Sojourner name and  is equipped with X-Box video games, a popular attraction wherever he parks in the summertime.  If a young person has dropped out of school, there is a program to help the individual attain a GED as well as training programs to provide needed skills.  The goal is to assist the individual to live independently.

Rotary Reading—Emily Dailey was not with us today, but sent the books via Kurt for this month’s reading in the Gallia County Local Schools first grade classes.  Tomorrow, February 1st is our official day to read.  February and March are the last months we will read in the schools this year!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary began club fellowship with the tune, “Crazy,” by Willie Nelson.  It was a great hit by Patsy Cline.  Gordo attempted to pry a fine from Margaret Evans, but to no avail!  Melissa Kimmel voluntarily offered up a buck for her missing badge and Happy Buck for sending off a ‘foster dog’ to a great home in DC. 

Split-The-Pot—Lee Saltzgaber was drafted into action this morning to run STP.  Our small pot grew to $6.00 and our lucky winner was Kevin Petrie.  Kevin asked that the winnings be donated to the Vinton Field of Hope Project.  Kevin missed out on the (not so big) big pot of $13.00.  Our foundation fine was assessed against anyone who has not donated to the Field of Hope project this year.

Political Activity—President Shirley reminded members about the prohibition of political activity by members at meetings.  Shirley read the email from District Governor Brent which spelled out the general guidelines for Rotarians to follow.

Gallipolis Rotarians and guests learned about the dangers of hypertension at the regular weekly meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  Past President Lou Ellen Werry presented as our speaker, Dr. Michael Englund, from the Holzer Cardiovascular Institute.  Pictured above are Past President Lou Ellen, Dr. Michael Englund, and Club President Shirley Doss.

Rotarians had the opportunity to check their blood pressure and received a heart shaped stress ball and a ‘Know Your Numbers’ health test recorder.  Ann Carter, Director of Nursing for the Cardiovascular Institute handled the BP checks.  Dr. Englund presented a fact filled, interesting talk and Rotarians learned that high blood pressure is the most common cardiovascular problem.  Known for years as the silent killer, high BP strikes over 74 million people.  Heart disease is the number one cause of death associated with high blood pressure.  Dr. Englund stressed the importance of knowing your numbers and living a lifestyle that can lower your risk to heart disease and diabetes.  Rotarians enjoyed asking our speaker many questions about lifestyles, nutrition, and vitamin supplements.  Thank you, Dr Englund and Past President Lou Ellen, for this interesting program!

President Shirley welcomed club members and guests to our meeting.  April Rice, from Farmer’s Bank was a guest of Heather Crum.  Welcome, April.  Rotarian Jodie McCalla, ‘Skyped’ in from her temporary office in Baltimore.

Fellowship—In the time remaining Fellowship Chair, Gordon Amsbary, led our club fellowship starting off with some Belushi trivia.  There were a no fines, but Jim Morrison offered a Happy Buck for something, which the Secretary could not hear.  Gordo’s words of wisdom concluded with Siddhartha.

Split-The-Pot—Shana Booher ran our STP for our meeting.  The small and large pot were both at $7.00 today as Clyde Evans pulled the Queen of Hearts last week.  Our lucky winner today was Kurt Dailey, and this actually makes twice in a row he has been drawn—the problem being his ticket last week was given to Clyde! Kurt narrowly missed the big one by drawing the King of Clubs.  Kurt assessed the foundation fine against anyone who hasn’t taken their blood pressure in the last week!

Rotary Readers—Project Chair, Emily Dailey asked for additional readers for our successful reading project for the first grade classes in the Gallia Local Schools.  There are only two more opportunities to read this year—February and March, so if you haven’t participated in this great project, be sure to see Emily!

Club President, Shirley Doss, introduced PDG Mel Simon who spoke to the club about Rotary’s Guatemala Literacy Project, (GLP).  PDG Mel mentioned that his advice to Chuck Clark’s enthusiastic return from his recent Guatemala trip, “Welcome to the club!”  He explained that Chuck ‘gets it’ and understands the joy of delivering hands-on service in another culture. 

Mel gave a brief overview of Guatemala and the challenges it faces as a developing country with a growing population and a diverse culture.  Two thirds of the country is mountains with 33 volcanoes, earthquakes, 33 different languages, and a literacy rate lowest in the Americas.  In some rural areas, nearly 3/4’s of the adult population cannot read or write.  Rotary’s response to help this country break the cycle of poverty is the Guatemala Literacy Project.

Rotarians viewed a 10 minute video which provided a first hand look into the project and how Rotarians from 400 clubs in the US, Canada and Guatemala have worked together in this self-sustaining program.  (Rotarians: please click on the above link and view this excellent video.)  Since 1988, the GLP has provided needed textbooks, library materials, and computer labs to help over 29,000 students.

There are annual trips for interested Rotarians to participate first hand the implementation of the grant, travel to schools, and assist in distributing textbooks and computer equipment.  Not only can our club provide needed assistance, but Gallipolis Rotarians can take part and experience the joys of ‘Service Before Self.’  Thanks, Mel and Chuck for the interesting program!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary ran our club fellowship for the meeting relating that 90 must now be the new 40!  There was more about the Crimean War as Gordo had done his homework!  Paul Koch was a bit late to the meeting today and was the only fine.  It was good to see Lee Saltzgaber back sporting a new beard.  Today is National Penguin Day!  There was a load of celebrity birthdays, but Gordo did not have any words of wisdom for us.

PR Grant—VP/President-Elect Jodie McCalla sent word our club has received the District PR Grant for this Rotary Year.  This grant will cover the costs involved in spreading the word of Rotary via the new Cinema in Spring Valley.  We plan to have Rotary PSA’s promoting the work of Rotary and our club shown before the features at the theater.

Split-The-Pot—Jim Morrison ran our STP for the meeting announcing the small pot was $7.00 and the large pot which has now grown to $142.00.  Jim asked ADG Matt Willis to draw the lucky winner which was Clyde Evans!  Clyde donated back the small pot to the club’s local foundation.  Clyde drew very carefully for the large pot and came up with the QUEEN OF HEARTS, winning the large pot of $142.00!  Clyde also designated this to be donated to the club’s foundation.  Thanks very much, Clyde!  He did assess the Foundation Fine against anyone who did not possess a full head of grey hair!  Some of us were close, but still chipped in a buck.

Program Chair, Shana Booher, arranged an interesting program for this week’s Rotary meeting about Holzer Clinic’s musculoskeletal services.  Our guest speaker, JT. Holland, Manager of this service, who is a Rotarian in Pt. Pleasant, provided an excellent overview of this important area in medicine.  Located at the Holzer Medical Center facility in Jackson, the Center provides comprehensive medical and surgical  expertise for the treatment of trauma injury as well as joint replacement, sport injury, and therapy.  Members enjoyed the opportunity to ask a few questions in the Q & A.  Thanks, JT and Shana for the interesting program!

Past President, Bonnie McFarland, presided over our meeting today as President Shirley was traveling.  We had excellent attendance today and it was good to see everyone back.  Jodie McCalla was with us via SKYPE from her temporary office in Baltimore.  We need to tweak it a bit for next week, but we could see Jodie and she could see us!

Treasurer’s Moment—Shawn Siders spoke briefly about the new club bill format via email.  Because all electronic communications from OVB is encrypted, you may have received Shawn’s email about your bill requiring you to log in first.  If you have any difficulty with the procedure, just give Shawn a call and he’ll explain it.  Most members had no difficulty in retrieving their bill.

Resignation—The club has received a letter of resignation from Rotarian Denise Shockley.  Denise’s professional obligations have prevented her from taking part in club meetings and projects this past year and we want to wish Denise all the best.  We will miss you!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary ran club fellowship for our meeting and dazzled members with some Crimean War trivia.  Gordon caught up on December birthdays with Resty Alonzo, Emily Dailey, and Heather Crum, each contributed a small donation and the club sang “Happy Birthday.”  I think we need some practice!  Gordon spun a bit more historical trivia and then closed with a few words of wisdom.

Split-The-Pot—Shana Booher also ran our STP for the meeting today and raised our small pot to $7.00.  Our lucky winner was Bonnie McFarland!  Bonnie’s draw for the ‘big one’ of $134.00 came up a little short with the Three of Diamonds.  She assessed the Foundation Fine against anyone ‘without a cold today’ thanks to a quick hint from Lee Bauman.  Bonnie did donate the small pot back to the club for projects!  Thanks, Bonnie!

Well, not quite Broadway, but a fun time at the first club meeting of the year!  Margaret Evans’ birthday was missed last month, so a special quartet +1 helped sing Happy Birthday at the meeting today.  Our ‘volunteers’ included PDG Mel Simon, Dave Nadler, Matt Willis, newest Rotarian, Amber Johnson, and Fellowship Chairperson, Gordon Amsbary.  Thank you all!

President Shirley Doss rang the bell to call the meeting to order promptly at 7:15 am on a very snowy morning.  Our attendance was a bit weak, but Rotarians slipped in as the meeting continued.

Monthly Board Meeting—President Shirley recommended we NOT have the regular monthly board meeting today and move all the business to the next month’s meeting which will be February 7th right after the morning meeting.

Coin Box—Emily Dailey turned in a Rotary coin box for her contribution to the Rotary Foundation.  This is a great way to make your loose change do some great Rotary work!

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led off our first club fellowship for the new year talking about large divorce settlements and some resolutions.  Jodie McCalla popped in a bit late as did Bonnie McFarland and Zac Fosler.  No fines were incurred due to the inclement weather.  The club enjoyed the special quartet +1 who sang to Margaret Evans for her birthday.

Rotary Reading on Wednesday—Project Chairman, Emily Dailey, brought books for Rotary Readers for this month.  We have two Scholastic Publishers picks—“Please Write Back” and “Noodles—I Love Snow.”  We don’t seem to have enough readers for this month, so some schools will slip to next Wednesday.  Please contact Emily if you would like to help out in this great project!

Program—We didn’t have a regular program today, but Chuck Clark volunteered to speak briefly about his experiences last month in Antigua, Guatemala.  Chuck presented a club banner from the Rotary Club of Antigua and spoke about the projects presently being undertaken by the local club there.

It was apparent from his talk that Chuck had a great experience in this Central American country, and he went on to add that there is an opportunity for Gallipolis Rotarians to get involved in Rotary’s work there.  RI operates a self-sustaining program called the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP)  where our club can participate with a Guatemala Rotary Club to help school literacy in Guatemala.  There are ‘hands-on’ opportunities every February for Rotarians to help in this project! Chuck has a video from RI and we will be learning more about it in the near future.

 President Shirley reminded Jodie that Pre-PETS will be Feb. 18th, since Jodie won’t be able to attend, she will arrange for the materials to be sent.  She also asked Shawn to send $300 to the Community Christmas Project and pay the rental fee for the Farm Festival tent to the GAHS Band Boosters.

Treasurer’s Report:  There is a large increase in the checking account due to the PMAAF deposit, which will be wired out in the next month.  Shawn also reported that he collected the Ro-Li-Ki money from the other clubs.  Overall, our checking account is down $1000.  Shawn mentioned that we will be able to name 5 Paul Harris Fellows this year.

Secretary’s Report:  Chuck reported that our attendance was 96% last month!

Scholarships:  The Board agreed to once again provide 4-$1000 scholarships for the 2012 graduates.

Other Business:  Shirley recommended that the Rotary Club pay $60 for the singer during the Christmas Party.  Paul moved, Debbie seconded, and all were in favor.

Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning and Rotary President Shirley Doss.

Program Chair, Melissa Kimmel, invited Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning to speak to our Rotary club today.  Sheriff Joe spoke to members about the changing operations of running the county jail, especially one that was built in the ‘50’s.  Joe explained it is challenging to cope with the average daily number of 46 inmates.  Local jails house more misdemeanor offenders than felons and there are specific rules regarding housing of prisoners.  Inmate medical cost is the largest single expense for the department. 

Our sheriff spoke briefly about the new Work Release Center. The Gallia County Work Release Center is an alternative to jail for individuals who have been convicted of minor criminal offenses.

All residents ‘pay-to-stay’ and are responsible for their own transportation to and from their employment, as well as, to any court dates and medical appointments. Residents are also responsible for their own medical expenses. Drug and Alcohol testing is completed for each resident. Sheriff’s Correctional Staff, as well as, Court probation officers will monitor the residents assigned to serve a sentence at this facility.

Christmas Dinner—President Shirley reminded everyone that next week, Dec. 12^th, we will NOT HAVE A MORNING MEETING!!!  Members and guests will enjoy its annual Christmas Dinner and Ornament Exchange at the Quality Inn (former Holiday Inn) at 6 pm.  It will be a relaxed evening of fellowship and we will be ordering from the menu and members will be responsible for their charges.

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led fellowship for the meeting starting with a bit of Wal-Mart trivia, sports trivia, and historical trivia.  There were no birthdays today.

Happy Buck$—We did have a number of Happy Bucks today.  Melissa Kimmel stressed the needs that exist for our local cat and dog shelters.  She distributed a list of items that members can donate.  Jodie McCalla bought a buck on her new opportunity with BTS Software Solutions (unleashbts.com), which will be opening a facility in Gallipolis in January.  Jim Morrison bought a buck for spending Thanksgiving with his daughter and grandchildren in the Bahamas.  Finally, Kurt Dailey, bought a buck in honor of Emily, who is recovering from some recent surgery.  Get well soon, Emily!

‘Split-Da-Pot’—Shana Booher ran our STP this morning and sold a bunch of tickets to run our small pot up to $9.00 this morning!  Good job!  Shana asked Sheriff Joe to draw our winner today which was  . . . Kevin Dennis!  Kevin said this makes two in a row, as he won last week as well!  Kevin drew ultra-carefully for the Queen for the large pot of $127.00, only to pull the Four of Spades.  Our Foundation Fine was assessed against anyone who has not yet donated to the Gallia Animal Shelter.  Kevin also donated back the small pot to the club!  Thanks, Kevin!

Final Balloting—Jim Morrison distributed the final ballots to members today to vote for the slate of officers and our new VP/President-Elect for 2012-2013.  Members had to choose five of the remaining eligible members to serve.  Jim and Deb Rhodes tabulated the numbers.  Congratulations to Paul Koch, Debbie Saunders, Shana Booher, Kevin Dennis, and Lee Saltzgaber who will serve our club next Rotary year.

History has show that some of the best and most stimulating programs often come from our own club members, and today’s program was a great example!  Former Ohio Representative Clyde Evans spoke from the heart today about the state of education in Ohio.  Clyde first spoke about how meaningful Rotary has made his life over the years.  He cited the decision to admit women into Rotary as an important and beneficial attribute for Rotary!

Describing the many problems that plague  education in Ohio, Clyde identified decisions that are often made from politically expedient solutions.  “We need a system that involves the parents more which can provide a profound impact on the system,” he said. 

Clyde cited the statistical fact that nationally our educational system has fallen to 25th among industrialized countries where we used to lead the world!  “You know there is a problem when a country such as Finland leads the world and our dropout rates are staggering,” continued Clyde.  It’s a system that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.  Members enjoyed the Q & A after our speaker’s remarks.  Thanks, Clyde for the interesting talk today.

Vice President/President-Elect Jodie McCalla led our meeting today for vacationing President Shirley Doss.  Shirley will be back with us next week.  Jodie welcomed Gallipolis Rotarians to our meeting today and we had no guests or visitors.  Our attendance was excellent for the first meeting after Thanksgiving.

Special Presentation—Deb Rhodes presented a check today from WesBanco Bank to Serenity House and Melissa Kimmel, Director.  Serenity House is the only available service of its type in Gallia county providing residential housing and shelter to women involved in domestic abuse.  The shelter especially needs your help at this time and should be included in your end of year giving plans.

Fellowship—Gordon Amsbary led club fellowship this morning and immediately moved to fine Sammy Lopez for missing his birthday in September.  Sammy organized a quartet to sing a belated Happy Birthday.  Gordo conducted a spelling bee with Kevin Dennis who show the club he could spell ‘Mississippi’ backwards!  Treasurer Shawn Siders also had a birthday today and had the entire club sing to him.

Coin Box—Nayyer Hassain brought in a full Rotary coin box this morning for his Rotary Foundation giving.  Margaret Evans delivered empties to several members to use.  It’s a great program!

Christmas Dinner—VP Jodie reminded the club our annual Christmas Dinner and ornament exchange will occur on Tuesday evening, December 13th.  Rotarians will gather this year at the Quality Inn (old Holiday Inn) at 6:00 pm for a relaxed evening of fun and fellowship.  Remember to bring a tree ornament to exchange.

Rotary Reads Project—Project Chair, Emily Dailey, announced that our next reading date for the first graders in the Gallia Local Schools, will be next Wednesday December 7th.  Emily has the books for readers and need help with reading at Addison Elementary for December.  Since we read to THREE first grades at this school, we really should have two Rotarian volunteers as readers each month.  Please carefully consider this opportunity to serve and see Emily for the books.  Reminder—new members, you need to work a club project to attain your blue badge, and this is a good one to work.

Medical Mission Update—PDG Mel Simon just returned from two weeks in the Philippines where he made contact with 10 sponsoring Rotary clubs in metro Manila.  This year is the 26th year Mel and Lydia have led this medical mission and Gallipolis Rotary is proud to be one of the sponsors!

Happy Buck$—Kevin Dennis offered up a buck to the club in celebration for wrapping up and sending a 75 page grant application for clean-up at the Field of Hope project.  The successful acceptance of this grant and award of $200,000 will allow this community project to move forward after many years of planning.  Congratulations, Kevin!

Split-The-Pot—New member, Heather Crum, jumped in this morning and helped run STP for the meeting.  Heather’s quick sales helped the small pot grow to $6.00 and our lucky winner was Kevin Dennis!  Kevin just missed the ‘Big One’ of $116.00 by drawing the Six of Spades.  He assessed the Foundation Fine against anyone who did NOT wear a blue shirt today.

New Member Induction—Gallipolis Rotary welcomed Amber Johnson from Holzer Healthcare Division, as a new member in the club. The induction was expertly handled by ADG Matt Willis who had our ‘newbie’ recite the Rotary 4-Way Test and the Object of Rotary. Amber’s sponsor, Bonnie McFarland, presented the Rotary membership pin. Please take the time to introduce yourself to our newest member and welcome Amber to our club.

Rotary President Shirley Doss welcomed members and guests to the regular meeting of the Gallipolis Rotary Club.  Shirley welcomed visiting Rotarian, Bill Knight, from Pt. Pleasant Rotary.  Our President complimented members of the good attendance today and asked everyone if they remembered what is happening next week . . . NO MORNING MEETING!

Coin Box—John Ellison turned in a stuffed coin box for his contribution to the Rotary Foundation.  Margaret Evans distributed new boxes to members who want to make their effort to fund this worthwhile program.  It’s a great way to painlessly make your suggested annual $100.00 contribution.

Club Fellowship—Fellowship Chair, Gordon Amsbary, led club fellowship for our meeting in his own unique way.  President Shirley confessed to a birthday TODAY, and paid up to have the entire club sing an excellent rendition of Happy Birthday.  Gordo mentioned that yesterday was “Loosen-up/Lighten-up Day.”

Happy Buck$—We had a number of voluntary ‘Happy Bucks’ today.  Kevin Dennis offered a buck the recent kickoff dinner for the Field of Hope project.  New member, Amber Johnson, bought a HB for the anniversary of Holzer Hospice.  Kurt Dailey offered a buck for finally attaining good cholesterol!

Leadership Balloting—Jim Morrison distributed the initial ballot to club members to vote to select an initial nominating slate of 10 Rotarians for club leadership for the next Rotary year.  Congratulations to the new slate including: Paul Koch, Kevin Petrie, Debbie Saunders, Dave Nadler, Shana Booher, Kurt Dailey, Kevin Dennis, Melissa Kimmel, Margaret Evans, and Lee Saltzgaber.  Many thanks to Jim and Deb Rhodes who counted the ballots!

Split-The-Pot—Today’s STP was enabled through the efforts of President Shirley, Shana Booher, and Past President Lou Ellen Werry.  Lou Ellen asked Dave Nadler to draw for today’s winner of the small pot of $10.00 which was John Ellison!  John closed his eyes and drew very carefully for the ‘big one’ of $110.00 only to come up with the Ten of Clubs.  Close, though.  John assessed the Foundation Fine against anyone who did NOT wear a black or navy shirt today!

Program—Today’s program chair was Jim Morrison who introduced our speaker, Bob Hood, who spoke about the Gallia County United Way.  Bob reviewed the 12 local non-profits who receive funding from the United Way.  Our local United Way is 100% local and all funds raised locally stays locally.  Bob also gave a ‘shout out’ to President Shirley and the Gallia Senior Resource Center for their support to the United Way.  This year’s campaign goal is $100,000.00, the same as last year.  There are two special fund raisers planned for the community: Breakfast With Santa and a US Bank sponsored Golf Tournament planned for June, 2012.  Please support our Gallia County United Way and help us make the goal.
